So. Every cosplayer in Chicago likely is gonna be camped here for the next 6 months.

chicagopubliclibrary:

Chicago Public Library Welcomes City’s First “Maker Space”
From Crain’s Chicago Business:

Next month, the Chicago Public Library will open the city’s first free “maker space” on the third floor of Harold Washington Library in the Loop. The pop-up fabrication lab will offer the public access to 3D printers, laser cutters, a milling machine and a vinyl cutter as well as a variety of supporting design software.
The facility is the first to come out of the CPL Innovation Lab, an effort to introduce new technologies to city residents. And the library is the first in a large city to experiment with a “maker space,” the city says. Though it will be similar to maker spaces at the Museum of Science and Industry and Pumping Station: One, this fab lab will be free to all.
The space opens July 8 and will close at year-end. After its six-month run, the library says it will consider hosting labs in neighborhood branches.
The space fits into a growing movement of hands-on collaborative learning environments that allow people to come together and exchange ideas in the pursuit of innovation, and was funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services in Washington.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer Chicagoans the opportunity to learn firsthand new technologies and skills used in today’s manufacturing at the library,” Library Commissioner Brian Bannon said in a statement. “The maker lab is the first of several ideas we plan to test over the next few years in the Innovation Lab, as we focus on expanding access to 21st century ideas and information to our communities.”

It’s that time again! A new giant batch of our zippers is being planned for production starting next month, and we would like your input, as always. Want some zippers that no one else makes ? We wanna make those!

► Please feel free to let us know what you’d like to see in:
♦ colors (of teeth or fabric - either matching or contrasting)
♦ lengths (really nothing is too long)
♦ styles (bag-opening, jacket-separating or just teeth chain)
♦ gauges (giant #30, large #10 and new mini #5)

Hint: many zippers in silver, white, red, purple and GLOW-IN-THE DARK are already on the go-list. Requests for those colors can very likely be added into our batch most easily.

Possible other colors may include: blue, orange, pink, magenta, yellow, gold, pewter, lime green and indigo. Wanna see those, too? Vote ‘em up!

★ Please feel free to drop us a note on the Master Zipper Suggestion list and/or reblog this post with your choices.

This awesome sculpture incorporates some of our giant zippers in its construction, and this video showcases a ton of really interesting techniques - not just for working with zips outside of fabric applications, but also a bunch of just really cool 3D crafting ideas. Designed by by Dale Mathis, the piece was sponsored for a $270,000 donation to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

I’m always taking more photos of our giant zippers - this time I’m making new business cards, so I wanted to show off some of the colorful options so far. (And yeah, I know we really need a purple or five. That’ll be next.)

Have suggestions for zippers we should make in the future? Please leave a note on the master list here. ^_-

“Unzipping wood!” A few years ago, one of our customers shared photos of this AMAZING custom oak kitchen / bar counter-top that incorporated one of our giant zippers into the design. When people ask for an awesome example of unusual zipper usage (i.e. outside of garments and bags) this killer decor concept is always my first thought.

The chain sets are back in our Etsy shop, at least for now! Shortly, the chain will be changing slightly - and in the near future, we will no longer be using the same exact supplies. (The pendulums will be a different shape and resin-casted instead.)

We (finally) finished putting together this video tutorial on our method of inserting one of our giant zippers when making an Organization XIII coat. (There are other valid techs, but this one is the most straight-forward for nice results - although it does involve tons of pinning prep work.) This was a little difficult to explain before by text alone, so I hope his helps clear up some common questions now.

New contrasting teeth and tape combos for our giant zippers. We started with black & white and white & black- which can also be mixed with the sides from each other for a kinda piano key type effect. Future zip batches will feature more high-contrast color combos in this style.

ToyMan Toy Show!

Folks in STL should come see orgXIIIorg’s very own Saeru, Nella, and Dirge at the Toy Man Toy Show tomorrow!! We’ll have a table with our wares set up, of course, all our Zim hats and Transformers merch and things, but there’s all kinds of cool collectibles, retro toys, old stuff, new stuff, WEIRD stuff, just stuff in general at the show! It runs 9 to 2, $4 or $5 to get in, with early bird admission at 8 for a little extra~

There’s also, like, cool artists and the ZOD and the local 501st battalion and all kinds of neat stuff!

(I have got to stop announcing this stuff the night before it happens.)
